Williamsburg Farmers Market

Located in Merchants Square, the Williamsburg Farmers Market is a delightful stop on your way to tour Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area. Pick up coffee and a scone from the sidewalk vendors as you peruse the fresh grown flowers, baked goods and scented homemade soaps, along with many more fresh products. The market is open on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon. The regular season ends Oct. 31. Be sure to check online at www.williamsburgfarmersmarket.com for a detailed schedule of activities which encompass live music, cooking demonstrations and educational programs.

Virginia Symphony Concert

The Virginia Symphony Orchestra (VSO) will perform a free concert Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at William & Mary’s Lake Matoaka Amphitheatre. The family-friendly concert is co-sponsored by the City of Williamsburg, the College of William & Mary, and William & Mary’s Student Assembly. The Symphony’s new Associate Conductor Benjamin Rous has crafted a rousing and varied program entitled Symphonic Fireworks! Selections include John Williams’ Star Wars Suite; Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee; Broadway highlights from Evita and Gypsy; and Tchaikovsky’s stirring 1812 Overture. Guests are invited to bring their family and friends, picnic baskets, beach chairs and blankets. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be held at Phi Beta Kappa Hall. Cookout and 18th Century Traveling Show

Owen Murdock, the lively emcee of A Grand Medley of Entertainments, invites you and your family to gather at Colonial Williamsburg’s Chowning’s Tavern at 5:30 pm on Saturday, September 4, for a cookout, followed by an 18th-century traveling show. Murdocks Miniature Medley features new diversions and old favorites performed outdoors at the Play Booth, a short walk from Chowning’s Tavern. 9/11 Remembrance and Freedom Walk

Colonial Williamsburg and the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance sponsor the 9/11 Remembrance and Freedom Walk starting at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10. The community is invited to join Colonial Williamsburg’s Fifes and Drums, a Joint Color Guard, 1st Responder Colors, Military/1st Responder senior officials and the Boy Scouts on a walk from Merchants Square to the Courthouse on Duke of Gloucester Street. At the Courthouse, participants in a ceremony at 6 p.m. remember the events of September 11, 2001. John Garay of the Alliance Armed Forces Committee offers introductions. Sgt. Terry Harper sings the national anthem. Lt. Cmdr. Karl A. Lindblad, chaplain at the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, gives the invocation. Clyde Haulman, mayor of the City of Williamsburg, welcomes officials and guests. Colonial Williamsburg’s Fifes and Drums performs. Patriot printer Alexander Purdie, portrayed by Nation Builder Dennis Watson, gives remarks. The program closes with the singing of “God Bless America.” Guests are encouraged to bring a chair or a blanket.

To Support and Defend

Merchants Square and Colonial Williamsburg celebrate the founding of the U.S. Constitution with “To Support and Defend,” the second annual event featuring the USAF Heritage of America Band, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17 on Duke of Gloucester Street in Merchants Square. Through powerful, moving music and the spoken word, the framework of our nation’s government and cherished founding document will be honored on the anniversary of its adoption. The premiere of a new arrangement of the familiar melody, "America the Beautiful," specially written to feature the Heritage of America Band and the Fifes and Drums performing together – bridging more than two centuries of musical performance practice. Selections by the Fifes and Drums, along with band works by eminent American composers William Billings, Aaron Copland, Charles Ives and John Philip Sousa, also will be performed. The program also features guest narrators including Colonial Williamsburg interpreters Ron Carnegie as George Washington and Stephen Moore as James Madison and Raymond Jones of WHRO. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. In the event of inclement weather, the rain date will be Saturday, Sept. 18.
